This one is going to be short and sweet. I certainly have spent some time in many previous posts talking about buying with intention, saving money by not wasting food and a million and one eco alternatives to harmful and wasteful products. We dove into simplifying with minimalism and that plain, simple and useful products are generally better and why and so on… But the easiest thing you can do to save money and tread lightly on the earth is to make use of what you have.
Let’s have a closer look.
Make use of what you have
With AI, robotic technology and the ever increasing inequality of wealth, not to mention polarizing politics, I can’t help but wonder: “where are we heading”? All this to say, it had me looking back in time.
Looking back on the great Great Depression, a time of relentless hardships, a time when grit and resilience became a way of life. It became quickly apparent that principals from those days still apply to this day. They certainly knew a thing or two about not wasting and making do with what you have.
Sayings from that era, still hold true and can quickly be adopted for eco living and saving money.
Sayings from the past that hold true to this day
“Use it up, wear it out, make it do, or do without”
Use this as your motto and I guarantee you will save money and reduce your waste.
“A stitch in time saves nine”
Small efforts now can save you later. Fix the stuff you already have. Can’t do it yourself, chances are you know someone who can. Mend a hole that’s developing in your pants before it gets bigger. Fix your leaky roof before it collapses. Embrace the wisdom of a timely intervention.
“Make hay while the sun shines”
Make the most of every chance, no matter of how small, in the long run they will add up and make a difference.
In the End
Simply save money and reduce your footprint by:
- making use of what you have
- fix things you already own
- Choose second hand
- Borrow if you can
- Avoid trends
- Buy better, buy less
One last classic saying that endures:
“Every cloud has a silver lining”
Resilience, optimism and the belief of a brighter future inspire.
