Why Minimalism?
Has our hyper-consumerist and throwaway society increased our quality of life?
People are starting to realize that our constantly busy and over scheduled lifestyles with big homes, more and more stuff and endless waste aren’t just taxing the planet, they are killing us along the way.
This is likely why so many of us are gravitating towards a life of more with less. Choosing simplicity, sustainability and minimalism over: stress, excess, pollution and debt.
More does not equal better, it’s often the opposite.
Minimalism Is
Minimalism is finding long term fulfilment and happiness by removing life’s excesses.
Living simply, consciously and intentionally.
It’s about only owning the possessions that you require and that you value. Remove anything else that distracts from this goal.
Simplicity is freedom, freedom from the trappings of excessive consumer culture.
It’s not a set of rules or living up to someone else’s standards.
What’s enough for you and your life goals? What is essential to you, that’s your choice.
You decide what you need, what you value, what brings you longterm joy.

A Word of caution
If you find yourself spending too much time in front of screen? Or to much time longing for a product or design?
Ask yourself “Is that really what minimalism is about”?
There is definitely irony in spending too much time in front of a screen to pursue minimalism or minimalist design.
Ideally you find balance. A mix of inspiring and interesting content that adds value to your life. Websites that can help you declutter and enjoy simple style.
Check out some of Becoming Minimalist tips for screen time. It was written for social media but it also applies to surfing the web.
Another word of caution, especially for the design sites is that they can encourage excessive consumerism.
They can make you feel like you need excessive clothes, products, cars, houses and electronics to be happy. Kinda the opposite of minimalism, don’t you think?
Leave a comment, if you think I am adding to the problem or if you have any other insight.
